Floor traffic, though, has in recent years become less of a factor as the show has become more of a "quality, not quantity" type of trade show.
Some exhibitors benefitted from the variety of non-army/navy buyers that visited the Military Tactical Outdoor section of the ASD/AMD Trade Show.
Rothco is one of the many companies that has taken advantage of the opportunity to garner new accounts in other markets aside from army/navy. In fact, sales to general merchandise buyers has become a major component of the company's sales at the ASD/AMD/MTO show.
"The number of army/navy dealers coming to the show is not increasing, and we've been able to establish relationships in other retail markets because of the diversity of buyers that attend the show," explained Rothco's John Ottaviano.
Ottaviano reported positive sales results from the August show, but not in excess of the total from the summer 2006 show. He does not believe that the presence of the new Army Navy Military Expo across town helped or hindered the cause.
"The new show didn't draw any new buyers. We just split the pie. But our new products did very well, and we had a great location on the show floor," he said.
Ottaviano was very happy about the new floor plan, the renewed focus on a positive show experience for the military surplus community and the commitment of show management to customer service.
"The new setup was beautiful and the positioning of our industry in the convention center was great. The show organizers did a very good job," Ottaviano said.
One other aspect of the ASD/AMD Trade Show was also improved, by general consensus. Exhibitors noted a much kinder and gentler attitude exhibited by GES, the show service contractors.
Next month, we will wrap up our review of the ASD/AMD Military Tactical Outdoor Show. And be sure to check www.ansommag.com for a full color gallery of show images.
